Want to know a little secret?
Dave and I don’t really do Valentine’s Day.
*Audible gasp!* Dun. Dun. Duuuun.
Not for any, “OH MY GOD, IT’S SUCH A HALLMARK HOLIDAY,” righteous indignation, it’s probably just laziness. We do get each other cards most years, sometimes not. A few years, we have actually purchased cards and not even signed them. It wasn’t always this way. Our first Valentine’s Day, we went away for the weekend and got each other all kinds of cute little presents and had hot hotel sex. But now? Eh, that sounds like a lot of work. I didn’t poop the whole weekend because it was our first trip away together and I didn’t want him to know I had bodily functions.
It’s not that we take each other for granted. I mean, sometimes we do I’m sure, because we’re normal. It happens, we just attempt to be mindful of it when it does. That can be very hard to do when you are raising children and you have 943 things on your to do list, but we try. There are still moments of whispering sweet nothings and flowers and hot hotel sex and there are thoughtful little presents, we just do those things for each other whenever we feel like it rather than saving it all up for the grandiose expectations of Valentine’s Day.
You know how I know he loves me? He spends an hour vacuuming out my car. He believes in me. He tells me to take a nap. He challenges me. He makes me laugh. He tells me I’m fancy. He pulls me tight and kisses me. He encourages me to grow as a person. He holds my hand. He brings me flowers on a Tuesday.
Right after grilling him about why his guilty conscience would lead him to get me Tuesday flowers, I realize that maybe he really does just like me. Almost as much as I like him.
And after ten Valentine’s Days, that right there is better than a card.

Kudos to you guys! This is about how my husband and I approach V-day. He's in the Navy and this is our eleventh V-day and he's not even here. But, like you're sweet guy, he washes my car, brings flowers on random days and cleans the bathroom for me on the one hundred or so days a year he is home. I'll take that over chocolate in February any day.
Happy Thursday!
This is such a lovely post...Loved it. Happy Valentine's Day!
How sweet! Love this post! :) Happy Valentine's Day!
I love this. Happy Valentine's Day - and congrats for putting into words what it's TRULY all about!!!
Aw, perfectly said! We don't really do Valentine's Day around here. Yes, we say it's a Hallmark/Hershey Holiday, and we probably are a little lazy, but in reality we love each other every day and don't really need a day to say it.
I got tulips today. They are my favorite flower, and the best part is They are potted so I can plant them to see them grow again. Hopefully. Mr. Kell is not a flowers and hearts kind of guy, so I am going to cherish them and my sweet poem he wrote me. This kind of stuff only comes once a year. On other days he will surprise me with a coke, which I have to day always makes me smile.
We are the same way. It's the little things that say I love you.
We don't do the whole mushy Valentine's Day thing either. We went to dinner, but I haven't seem in a bit because of the bar studying thing, so that was nice. And he got me chocolate. Because he loves me. But no gushy cards or anything. It's nice to be lowkey about it.
Agreed!
Totally agree! We don't really do Valentine's day either. I pretty much think its a waste of money. We usually do cards and he usually gets me flowers (sometimes) this year it was nothing. No card and no flowers. We were too busy to think of anything else but just getting through the day in one piece.
Oh yeah, random flowers are the best, especially if they are your favorite kind. It's funny how so many of us are "meh" about V-day now. It's more for the youngins trying to woo each other...
