Milli Vanilli? Anyone?

I've been to a lot of concerts in my years.  My first was when I was 6 or 7 and it was the Beach Boys before Dennis Wilson, their original drummer drowned.  The only thing I remember about it was that I thought it was so cool that they blew up beach balls and had them bouncing around the audience and that we had really good seats.

After that in a melange that is my pre-teen years, it was Heart, Mister Mister, New Kids on the Block, Kenny Loggins and the kicker... Milli Vanilli.  I blame that one on my sister Lyndsey who made us go for her birthday after she came home with their tape after her visit to California one summer.  My cousin John and I still make fun of her for it.

And on to the high school & college years that brought Def Leppard, They Might Be Giants, Sponge, Beck, Nine Inch Nails, Color Me Badd, Leanne Rhimes, Rage Against the Machine, Red Hot Chili Peppers, De La Soul, Dave Matthews, Sade, Rick Astley, Basia, Jimmy Buffet, Steve Miller and probably lots of others that I will remember only after I post this.  I have to laugh now because some of these were influences from boyfriends of Christmas past, it's amazing what you'll listen to when a boy claims they are awesome.

That era of my life has it's share of Milli Vanillis too, only they were named Bjork and Yoko Ono.  You didn't really think being Rick Rolled was the worst of it did you?  Those are fucking weird hours of my life that I will never get back my friends.  I am not entirely sure if any of either were in English or more a mix of who knows what and some wailing.

Now that I'm ahem, "a grown up," we see concerts like Wynton Marsalis, John Legend, Elton John, Earth Wind & Fire, Barenaked Ladies, and a little band we're seeing later this summer... maybe you've heard of U2?  Because really, it costs a small fortune to see U2, you have to be a grown up to afford it.  Did I mention we're sitting close enough to sit on Bono's lap?  I'm pretty sure it's going to be the best night of my life, not that I'm excited or anything.

Now that I've aired my secrets, please tell me I am not the only one with weird concerts in my closet.  Tell me the best or worst concert you've ever been to in a comment.

Worst concert was probably Color Me Badd - but only worst now looking back on it, at the time I thought it was awesome! Either that or Barry Manilow with my mom but that wasn't even that bad. The man knows how to entertain a crowd!
The best (this is really tough) is a tie: the lead singer and bass player of the band Travis - they did an acoustic chronilogical history of their music, all complete with a slide show and a meet & greet after the show - and the Stereophonics in a really tiny venue in Columbus, Oh. Shit packed with people, speakers in my ear (I couldn't hear for 3 days), super close to the band and meeting (stumbling & tongue-tied) the super hot lead singer before and after the show.

  2. Amy, I'm pretty certain we can blame Sarah for the CMB concert.

  3. I saw the Backstreet Boys in concert with my best friend - and my mother.

    I'm sorry, I was like 12.

  4. My first concert was the Police
My concert that I didn't think I would like but had the best time was KISS/Aerosmith.

I am SO jealous you are going to U2, tell Bono Hi for me we share the same birthday (May 10th) and he touched my daughter's head when she was 2 as she ran by him in the Club Lounge at the Ritz Carlton in Buckhead. I have never forgiven my husband for not letting me take a picture of the two of them (he said it was tacky)

  5. U2 is coming here to play our big new college football stadium. Outdoors.

I may have to park near and see what I hear....

I saw New Kids on The Block because my dad got free tickets and I was working at The Boys and Girls Club. I took my favorite girl...she only had a step-mother, and while she was a NICE step-mother this child made ME her mother's day card in school. I loved her.

Took her to dinner, the show, and bought her a t-shirt. She was in HEAVEN for weeks.

  6. So once my uncle had box seats to New Kids on the Block...then stupid ass Donny was doing they boy-band dance and fell through the stage and the concert was postponed. So by the time they got around to rescheduling it NKOTB was so not cool anymore....The only good thing was that Tommy Page opened up for them (tell me you aren't singing "I'll be there for you"right now???)
As for the best...tough call. All the Buffet shows rocked, NIN was always killer (I LOVE YOU TRENT!) and of course The Rivermen were a local Toledo fave.

  7. Brian Adams when I was 12. I sponged rolled my hair. I Found myself surrounded by middle-aged house wives who cried at the power ballads. I don't think I was emotionally mature for Brian Adams at 12. I should have been at a new kids on the block concert instead.
